CBS Early Show Anchor Harry Smith to Have Colonoscopy On-Air

Anchor Harry Smith will have a colonoscopy live on the CBS Early Show March 10.  He plans to tell viewers about the procedure while it is happening.

Evening News anchor and managing editor Katie Couric will be with Smith during the colonoscopy and as he prepares for it the night before.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Mark Pochapin will do the procedure at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Katie Couric had a screening colonoscopy on the air in 2000 which is credited with a 20 percent increase in the number of colonoscopies performed across the United States.  It has been dubbed the "Couric Effect."

After losing her husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, Couric has become a leading advocate in the fight against the disease.
