The Colorectal Cancer Alliance of Central Massachusetts will provide community outreach and raise public awareness of the impact of colorectal cancer on our lives and in society.

Here is a brief description what you will find on the CCACM web pages:

  • About Us ----- As stated above we will provide community outreach and raise public awareness of the impact of colorectal cancer on our lives and in society.
  • What is Colorectal Cancer ---- A disease in which normal cells in the lining of the colon or rectum begin to change, grow without control, and no longer die.
  • Screening & Prevention -- Screening at age 50 is the key to preventing colorectal cancer.
  • Colon Cancer Treatment --- Colon cancer treatment programs vary by the stage of the disease at the time of surgery (if operable) or at the time of diagnosis (if metastatic or not operable).
  • Rectal Cancer Treatment --- Rectal cancer treatment programs vary by the stage of the disease, and whether it is operable or not. A treatment program may initially be defined at the time of diagnosis based on the "Clinical stage" (see below), and further treatment may be required after surgical removal of the tumor based on the "Pathologic stage"
  • Genetics & Colorectal Cancer
  • Colonoscopy in IBD - Meghan Leary, University of Massachusetts - Amherst, Undergraduate Class of 2012
  • Research --- Scientists explain what research is being done on colon cancer.
  • Medical Advisory Board representing talented physicians specializing in internal medicine, surgery, gastroenterology, and oncology. The Advisory Board consists of patients, caregivers, and community volunteers.
  • Links---- Massachusetts residents might be interested with the following University of MA Medical School web sites. The first one is U Mass Memorial Medical Center News/Events. The second is to make a donation, the third is the department of Colorectal Surgery, the fourth is colon and rectal surgery appointments, and the last two are about two scientists/physicians that do colon cancer research at U Mass Medical School. Many other links that are listed will provide a wealth of information on colorectal cancer.
  • Testimonials --- Stories from different people that have had colorectal cancer. If anyone else would like to share their story please email it to bkpfr@aol.com.
  • Advocacy --- Advocacy comes to you; it becomes your mission. It is your gift. Cancer is hard but surviving it even harder. A friend, Kate Murphy told me "many people are into screening but living with cancer & coping with it is harder and more complicated."
